A Broken Promise

What they said...
While campaigning for office in 2009, Darrell Dexter promised that the NDP would balance the budget without increasing taxes.
On the campaign, Dexter said, "We are proceeding in the most fiscally prudent way we can, which is to balance budgets."
He also campaigned to do so without raising taxes, a promise Stephen McNeil said he knew he couldn't keep.
What really happened...
After taking office, the Dexter government immediately started back-peddling and said that balancing the books would be harder than they portrayed it.
Eventually, they broke their promise to balance the books without a tax increase and made our HST the highest in Canada.
